About Jake

Jake Stone is an early childhood educator with a keen interest in early learning and development. He has an MA in educational psychology from Simon Fraser University and is currently in the Ph.D educational psychology program where he is researching early childhood and social understanding. He is also a parent.

Jake's work in the Burnaby community focuses on helping young children develop social understanding and adjust to the social constraints that our society demands of young children. For most of history, children interacted in social groups that included older children and adults. Nowadays, children need to adjust to the demands of schooling and school rules. They need to socialize with large numbers of peers who are very close in age. For some children, this proves to be more of a challenge than to others. Jake tries to support those children that find social engagement difficult.

Jake is not concerned with whether a child has been diagnosed with Autism, ADHD or is simply hard to handle. Jake takes each child as an individual. He examines the context of the child's life and the difficulties faced by both the child and the child's family. He then offers support in helping to overcome these difficulties.

In short, Jake is a tutor for young children that struggle socially, no matter what the reason.

Before Contacting Jake.

Very similar services are provided for free to everyone in B.C through the supported child development program. The service is confidential, does not demand the child is diagnosed and is staffed by very wise and experienced educators. I strongly recommend that parents start by contacting the supported child development program.

Contacting Jake.

Jake may be of service for the following reasons:

  1. The experts at supported child development have a high case load. Their personal involvement with each child is limited.

  2. Jake's qualifications provide a deep understanding of development and social understanding that may offer a differing perspective on your child's challenges.

  3. Jake's approach may be different from some behavioural interventionists. Jake does not focus on behaviour alone. Rather Jake focuses on developing a broad array of social abilities ranging from self-regulation and attention to language, narrative and social awareness.
